Fastpitch defense

Who covers which base on a bunt in fastpitch softball?

On a sacrifice with a runner on first, the corners and the pitcher charge, the catcher takes balls dying in front of the plate and calls the base, the second baseman covers first, and the shortstop covers second. Take the sure out at first unless the bunt comes hard to a fielder already moving toward second. With two outs, take the surest force out. No run scores on it.

Before every pitch in a bunt situation:

  • The catcher knows which base comes first.
  • The second baseman is ready to break for first.
  • Everyone knows who has third if the third baseman charges.
  • Right field is ready to back up first.

These jobs are team convention. The rulebook decides the two-strike foul bunt, the infield fly, the batter's and catcher's boxes, the runner's lane and obstruction. Fastpitch has no lead: every runner starts on the release (USA Softball 8-7-S).

Who goes where, by runners on base

A bunt with nobody on is a bunt for a hit, and the coverage is the same.

Runners Fields the bunt First Second Third The throw
Nobody on 1B, 3B and P charge 2B SS Not needed First
First 1B, 3B and P charge 2B SS Your team's call First, or second on a hard bunt fielded early
Second 1B and P charge; 3B charges or holds, by call 2B SS 3B, back on the bag if someone else fields it First: third is a tag, not a force
First and second, third stays home 1B, P and C 2B SS 3B Third on a firm bunt fielded early, otherwise first
First and second, wheel called 1B and 3B crash; P takes the middle 2B Open, or CF by call SS, breaking on the pitch Third on a firm bunt fielded early, otherwise first
Third, squeeze on 1B, 3B and P charge; P covers home if C fields 2B SS Not needed once the runner commits Home if you can beat the runner, otherwise first

Every row is team convention. The catcher takes any bunt dying in front of the plate. Right field backs up first, center field second and left field third. With nobody on or a runner on first, a catcher who does not field the ball trails the batter-runner to back up first, as Tim Walton coaches at Florida. With a runner on second or third, the catcher stays home.

The standard rows match Rundown's second-base coverage guide: when the second baseman rotates to first, the shortstop owns second. On the wheel the shortstop leaves for third, so second is open unless the call sends center field.

The catcher's call: where the throw goes

Call the base early and loud: "One!", "Two!", "Three!" or "Home!" Rundown's convention gives the call to the catcher, who faces the ball and every runner. Walton has an infield leader make it. Either works if the infield hears one voice.

With fewer than two outs:

  • Runner on first: "One!" by default. "Two!" when the bunt comes hard to a fielder already moving toward second, with the shortstop on the bag. Cindy Bristow of Softball Excellence wants the fielder with the cleanest throw to second to take the bunt, for the lead runner when that out is there. At 10U and 12U, first is the safer default.
  • Runner on second: "One!" Third is a tag play, and a late throw there leaves runners on first and third. Tie-breaker innings start with a runner on second (USA Softball 5-11), so expect this bunt.
  • Runners on first and second: "Three!" when third is covered and the bunt is fielded early, usually by the catcher or the pitcher. Otherwise "One!"
  • Bases loaded: "Home!" Every base is a force, and the catcher steps on the plate, then throws to first.
  • Runner on third: "Home!" when the fielder can beat the runner. Otherwise "One!"

With two outs, call the surest force, usually "One!" No run scores when the third out is the batter-runner before first or a runner forced by the batter, even if a runner crossed the plate first (USA Softball 5-5-B-1).

What the rulebook decides

Rules here come from USA Softball, read in full, and from NFHS (high school) through USA Softball's 2026 rule differences chart and NFHS interpretations. We could not read Softball Canada's 2026/2027 fast pitch rules, which sit behind a paid subscription, or the full NFHS book. Softball Canada's rule book governs Canadian Championship play, and leagues may change it, so check your code.

A foul bunt with two strikes is an out

Under USA Softball, a bunt that goes foul after the second strike puts the batter out. The ball is dead and runners go back (7-6-I). A bunt caught in the air is a catch and stays live. NFHS's 2022 interpretation confirms the out on a foul bunt with two strikes. A missed bunt with two strikes falls under the dropped third strike rule (Rules Supplement 10).

There is no infield fly on a bunt

USA Softball's infield fly excludes an attempted bunt (Rule 1), so a popped bunt is an ordinary live fly. The intentional drop rule does cover a bunt. With first occupied and fewer than two outs, catching it and dropping it on purpose gets a dead ball, the batter out and the runners sent back (8-2-K). A ball that falls untouched is not an intentional drop (Rules Supplement 30). The chart lists no NFHS difference on either rule.

The batter hits from inside the box

Under USA Softball, the batter is out if, when bat meets ball, an entire foot is on the ground completely outside the box or any part of a foot is on the plate. Stepping out and back in to hit is also an out (7-6-F to H). The ball is dead and runners return. A running slapper has to stay inside that line. The chart lists NFHS as the same (7-4-8).

The catcher cannot take the pitch away from a squeeze

The catcher stays in the catcher's box until the pitch is released (Rule 1), and reaching over or in front of the plate for the pitch can be catcher's obstruction (Rules Supplement 36). On a squeeze or a steal of home, obstructing the batter or touching the batter or bat gives a dead ball, the run, and first base to the batter (8-1-D-4). A pitchout fits the rule: leave the box after the release and catch the ball wide of the batter. The chart has no row on this penalty, so check the NFHS award.

A fielder without the ball cannot block the bag

A fielder who neither holds the ball nor is fielding a batted ball commits obstruction by impeding a runner (USA Softball 8-5-B; NFHS 8-5-2). USA Softball's order is catch the ball, then block the base, then tag (Rules Supplement 36). That binds the second baseman waiting at first and the third baseman waiting at third. Obstruction is an NFHS point of emphasis for 2026. The fielder fielding the bunt has the right of way: a batter-runner who interferes with that fielder is out (USA Softball 8-2-F).

The runner's lane and the double base

Over the second half of the way to first, the batter-runner belongs in the three-foot lane in foul ground. A batter-runner outside it who interferes with the fielder taking the throw is out (USA Softball 8-2-E; NFHS 8-2-6), unless avoiding a fielder fielding the ball. USA Softball's interpretation asks whether the throw hit a part of the runner outside the lane. NFHS asks whether either foot last touched the ground completely outside it.

USA Softball requires the double first base in every division (8-2-N). On a play at first, the fielder uses the white half and the batter-runner the colored half. On a force attempt from the foul side, such as a catcher's throw from up the line, both may use either half, and the batter-runner may run in fair ground (8-2-E, 8-2-N-4). NFHS uses the double base where the state association adopts it (1-2-1).

What the coaching staff decides

Everything in this section is convention. Another sound system works if every player knows it before the pitch.

Set the depth before the pitch

Bristow notes that the alignment before the pitch decides who fields the bunt. Against a left-handed hitter with power, play the first baseman back and let the pitcher and third baseman take the bunts. Against a right-handed hitter with power, do the reverse. With two strikes on a sacrifice bunter, the corners can ease back, because a foul bunt is an out; a slapper may still drag.

Who covers first

The second baseman covers first whenever the first baseman charges or fields the bunt. Mike Candrea, writing for USA Softball, and Walton both teach it. The pitcher covers first when the second baseman fields the ball, as on a push bunt past the circle. A crashing pitcher who hears the first baseman call the ball peels off, so two players do not race to one bag.

Who covers third

The third baseman covers third when the call keeps that player on the bag. If the third baseman charges, programs split, and Rundown does not teach one default. Coaches use the pitcher, the left fielder, the shortstop or the catcher, and some leave the bag empty. Bristow notes that many coaches send the left fielder and argues for an infielder, who is used to tags around a base. A fast runner on first can keep going when the bunt goes to the charging third baseman, as Bristow describes. Name the player before the pitch.

Runners on first and second: pick a look

  • Third stays home. The third baseman holds the bag while the pitcher, catcher and first baseman take the bunt, and the shortstop has second. The force at third is live on any bunt fielded early.
  • The wheel, or rotation, by call. The shortstop breaks for third on the pitch, both corners crash, the second baseman covers first, and the pitcher takes the middle. Second is left open. Judi Garman and Michelle Gromacki describe this coverage and note that a center fielder sent to second leaves nobody behind the bag, so an overthrow can clear the bases.
  • Nothing called. If the third baseman charges and nobody was told to take third, look the lead runner back and throw to first.

A fake bunt and slash, or a push past the crashing corners, punishes the wheel. Call it from 14U up, and not on every pitch.

Defend the squeeze

On a suicide squeeze, the runner on third goes on the release and the batter has to bunt any pitch, as Ralph and Karen Weekly teach the offense. The defense:

  • On squeeze tells, the catcher calls a pitchout.
  • A bunt fielded quickly near the plate goes home. A catcher who fields it there tags the runner.
  • A bunt that is down and placed has scored the run, so get the out at first.
  • When the catcher leaves the plate to field, the pitcher covers home.
  • When the batter misses, tag a runner who keeps coming, and run one who stops back toward third.

On a safety squeeze, the runner goes once the bunt is down and away from the pitcher and catcher. Look the runner back, then throw to first. If the runner breaks and the throw can win, go home. With runners on second and third, the first baseman looks home after the out, because the runner from second may keep coming. With two outs, take first.

Defend the slap and the slap bunt

Teams use "slap bunt" loosely. USA Softball's scoring rule defines a slap hit as a fake bunt followed by a controlled swing (11-2-B note). A slapper can also drag or push a bunt off the running start, so the defense reads the bat on every pitch.

Candrea's Arizona teams played the slap straight up: the shortstop toward the hole between third and short and in by the slapper's speed, the third baseman off the line, and a shortstop who charges and throws on the run. Rundown's convention adds the first baseman in for the drag, the second baseman a step toward first and left field shallower. The third baseman reads the bat: down to bunt, charge; back to slap, hold. A corner who crashes on every show gets slashed past.

On a steal, Candrea puts the second baseman on second when the slapper runs through the box, and the shortstop when the batter shows bunt, which frees the second baseman for first. With a runner on first and a slap to the left side, the force at second often beats the race to first.

Age the teaching

USA Softball's divisional focuses introduce bunting at 10U, squeeze plays at 14U, and infield bunt coverage at 16U and 18U. The ladder below is Rundown's coaching judgment:

  • 10U: One coverage. Corners and pitcher charge, the catcher calls "One!", the second baseman covers first, the shortstop covers second, and right field backs up. Throw to first. Catch a popped bunt.
  • 12U: Add the lead force on a hard bunt, the full catcher's call, the pitcher covering home on a squeeze, slapper alignment and steal coverage, and a named player for third.
  • 14U: Add the looks with runners on first and second, the wheel by call, the pitchout, the safety squeeze read, and the push, slash and fake-bunt slap counters.
  • 16U and up: The catcher runs the calls and changes looks. Older teams can drill letting a popped bunt fall untouched with a runner on first, to turn two.

A 10-minute bunt defense block

Use a full infield, right field, center field and runners in helmets. A coach beside the plate rolls bunts to spots while a batter in a helmet squares without swinging. Rotate runners every rep.

  1. Minutes 0 to 2, no runners. Roll bunts to each lane. The fielder calls the ball, the catcher calls "One!", the second baseman takes the throw, and right field backs up.
  2. Minutes 2 to 5, runner on first. Vary the roll. The catcher calls "One!" or "Two!" Score 2 for the lead out, 1 for the out at first, 0 for a throw that gets nobody.
  3. Minutes 5 to 8, runners on first and second. Run your look, and name the player on third before each rep.
  4. Minutes 8 to 10, runner on third. The coach tells the runner privately whether to go on the release or wait for the bunt. The catcher calls "Home!" or "One!", and the pitcher covers the plate when the catcher leaves.

Count runs allowed, not throws.

Quick answers

Who covers first base on a bunt in softball?

The second baseman, whenever the first baseman charges or fields the bunt. The pitcher covers first when the second baseman fields the ball, such as a push bunt past the circle. Right field backs up the throw.

Who covers third base on a bunt in fastpitch?

The third baseman, when the call keeps the third baseman on the bag. If the third baseman charges, it is a team call: programs use the pitcher, the left fielder, the shortstop or the catcher. On a called wheel, the shortstop takes third. Name the player before the pitch.

Should you throw to first or second on a sacrifice bunt?

First, unless the bunt comes hard to a fielder already moving toward second and the shortstop is on the bag. The catcher makes the call. With two outs, take the surest force out: no run scores on it.

Is there an infield fly on a bunt?

No. Under USA Softball an attempted bunt cannot be an infield fly, so a popped bunt is live. Catching it and dropping it on purpose, with first occupied and fewer than two outs, is an intentional drop: dead ball, batter out, runners back.

What happens on a foul bunt with two strikes?

The batter is out, the ball is dead, and runners go back. If the bunt is caught in the air, it is a catch and the ball stays live.

How do you defend a slapper in fastpitch?

Mike Candrea played the slap straight up: shortstop toward the hole between third and short, third baseman off the line. The corners charge the bunt and hold on the slap. On a steal, the second baseman covers second when the slapper runs through the box, the shortstop when the batter shows bunt.
