Who's swinging
Ages 10–13 are read for sequence and balance, not pro degree targets. Ages 14–18 use tighter bands where the 2D view supports them.
How to film it
- Stand to the side, not behind the hitter
- Hold the phone at contact height, about belt to thigh. Filming from above tilts the read
- Whole body and the full bat arc in frame
- Anywhere you can see the whole swing. Handheld is fine, any phone is fine
- One swing per clip, under 10 seconds
The fine print: pose reading runs in your browser. The first run downloads the reader (about 21 MB) and your browser keeps it for next time. Swing Lab estimates checkpoints from a 2D camera view. It isn't a measurement lab, and when it can't see something it says so instead of guessing.

Where these benchmarks come from
The checkpoint definitions and age bands draw on published hitting research and coaching references:
- Driveline Baseball: bat speed by level, the lead-leg block, hip-torso separation, spine angle
- Blast Motion: on-plane efficiency, early connection, rotational acceleration
- RPP Baseball: the kinematic sequence and X-factor (hips lead, then torso, then hands)
- OnBaseU: the phases of the swing and the lower-body faults
- SABR (peer-reviewed): stride length and head movement
- HittingPerformanceLab: fastpitch-specific mechanics and bat-drag fixes
- WIN Reality: bat speed by age, both sports
- AJSM / PMC: academic stride-length normatives
How we grade: Swing Lab uses bands, not a single overall score. Ages 10-13 are judged on sequence and stability, not raw pro degrees. Ages 14-18 use tighter bands where the evidence supports them. Rotation and separation from one phone camera are 2D estimates, not lab measurements. If the evidence is weak, the checkpoint is left ungraded.
Most published ranges come from baseball studies and are projected onto fastpitch, so softball mode runs a notch more forgiving until sport-specific data is loaded.
